This is a love story like no other. Not only do we experience the love of the couple, but we get to see the love that wedding vendors have for their work and helping others as they come together to provide the wedding of Heidi and Rodney’s dreams.
How They Met
It’s a long and unique love story that will have a happy ending, the couple said. They became friends in high school, before distancing themselves as teenagers often do to their pals as they grow and mature into adults, then reconnected and fell in love in 2014.
While not exactly love at first sight, Moore and Comer admit they’ve changed since high school. In fact, they’re doubtful love would have blossomed if they started to date back then.
“We weren’t really close friends in high school, but when we met out of high school, we kind of hit it off,” says Rodney. “It’s been like that ever since. We’re a lot alike and we’re best friends.”
When Rodney called Maxime Martin, a concierge at the St. Sulpice Hotel in Old Montreal, asking for help to set up a memorable trip, Martin sprang into action. On Rodney’s end, the proposal has been months in the making, but Martin only had hours to put something together and he immediately called restaurateurs, boutique owners, even the Montreal Casino to contribute.
At each place they visited, a memory card was waiting for Heidi – made by Rodney, that each depicted a milestone in the couple’s relationship.
What was supposed to be a New Year’s trip, turned into an a well planned proposal. On New Year’s Day, in front of the Notre Dame Basilica and a crowd of strangers, Rodney asked Heidi to marry him, presenting her with a ring he had custom made and she accepted.
The Interruption of Everything
The untold background of this story is that Heidi was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010, underwent chemotherapy and surgery and was deemed cancer-free. But in 2014, a routine MRI showed a 10-centimetre long tumour growing on her liver. The cancer had spread to her lungs and entered stage four.
They’re looking into the option of participating in clinical trials in the U.S. and in Toronto, options that aren’t all covered by insurance and could cost thousands. Rodney set up a GoFundMe page to start raising money so they can pay for whatever treatment she chooses to go with.
Heidi and Rodney know they’re facing an uphill battle, but they believe they’ll come out the winners. She has a 7-year-old daughter and says her positive attitude is all because of her.
To make this big day happen for Heidi and Rodney, Alexandria Damouni, of OMG Events in Vaughan, ON, organized more than 25 wedding vendors to work their magic to produce the wedding of their dreams for free! From the bride’s dress, to the venue, decorations and food, everything was donated.
“This is our passion. We saw a story, it resonated with us, we felt for them, we loved Heidi’s strength, we saw Rodney’s strength in supporting his fiancée,” said Alexandria.
Help Heidi Beat Cancer
Heidi’s campaign has raised more than $20,000 and their goal is to raise $40,000 to pay for Heidi’s treatments. Those wishing to help Heidi and Rodney can submit their donation at: https://www.gofundme.com/heidimoore
